Spring Quarter can be the worst for everyone. Summer is right around the corner and the weather is just so nice.
You may be battling senioritis where the only cure is graduation. You may just be having procrastination fever due to the urge to sit outside and read a luxurious book.
No matter what the reason, we will help you steal back your focus in order to take charge of Spring Quarter!
The first step is to realize there is a problem. Here are some signs to look out for:
- You check Facebook more than once an hour.
- You spend all day in your sweatshirt and sweatpants.
- You have more than 1 incomplete assignment
- Your grades are bringing your cumulative GPA down.
- You skip classes at least twice a week.
- There is just WAY too many bottles of Malibu Rum (or another type of alcohol) in your apartment.
- Your friends are acting like they just don’t care. Which means more than likely, they have infected you to just don’t care.
If you show at least 2 of these signs, you have senioritis or a lack of focus for school. We all know that college is expensive. Some of those degrees cost an arm and a leg! Why waste that money by only doing mediocre in your Spring classes? It’s not like you should be studying the whole time! There needs to be a balance between work, school, and FUN!
Here are some tips to help you make your Spring Quarter worthwhile socially and academically:
1. Organize and prioritize tasks into a schedule
All those things that you need to do (homework, projects, papers, sport practices, etc) can be put on a schedule. This way you can see when you are not free.
2. Plan specific days where you can do whatever you want
This is where the schedule created in #1 can help. All the free spaces show you when you can relax and do what you want to do.
3. Reward yourself
After finishing a big project or a long paper, reward yourself with something nice. It can be going out for drinks, eating a delicious dessert, or going to an event with your friends.
4. Do schoolwork first thing when you arrive home in 30-60 minute sessions
This is just a rule of thumb. Everyone studies differently. One way is to right away once you get home in order to have all night to freely do as you choose. Also, take study breaks. Let yourself do something else after every hour of studying in order to relax your mind. This leads to quality work if done right.
5. Do not try to multitask
Multitasking can generate low quality work since only part of your attention was given to it. There will be a time when there just isn’t enough time in the day to get things done. Your employer may ask you to take an extra shift or you are sick for a day. Those things happen and that’s when we need to prioritize our work. Get the most important thing done and then move on to the next important thing. Also, if there are things that you can delegate to others (like organizing a group meeting), do it. Friends are only friends if they are willing to give you a hand when you most need it.
6. Keep distractions away
Keep your phone at the opposite end of the room and/or log out of social media sites. Whatever gets you distracted, turn it off.
7. The 5 minute rule
This rule is a lifesaver. If there is something on your to-do list that only takes up to 5 minutes, get it done right away. The less things on your to-do list the better. The relief from having one last thing will propel you into crossing off more items on your list.
8. Distract yourself from getting yourself distracted
People do this is different ways. Some listen to classical music with headphones in order to concentrate on homework. Some people need to chew gum so that they don’t go to the kitchen every 5 minutes for a snack. Whatever distracts you, try to find a way to stop it.
9. Create a study group to help your friends stay on task
Procrastination fever is the worst when all your friends are suffering from it. Try being the role model for your group by leading a study group. This will keep your friends on task but most importantly, keep you on task. Your group can even take any of the tips giving to you today and amplify it. Who doesn’t like going out to celebrate after finishing a long project?
